Tristan and Isolde is about the illicit love between the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Isolde. Tristan escorts Isolde from Ireland to marry his uncle, King Mark of Cornwall. They ingest a love potion on the journey and fall madly in love.

Stanhope Forbes was born in Belfast in 1847 and died in Newlyn in 1947. 'A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach' debuted in 1885 and was a huge hit, leading other artists to congregate in Newlyn. Forbes became the leader of the 'Newlyn School' art colony on the coast of Cornwall.
