When I was a teenager, I stumbled into an exhibit of paintings by Henry Ossawa Tanner, who is to this day one of my favorite artists. He was an African American painter in the 1800s whose use of light and color is so amazing.
2. Here are some works by Henry Ossawa Tanner (June 21, 1859 – May 25, 1937). He was the only black student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and was a favorite of professor Thomas Eakins. Tanner was the first African-American painter to gain international acclaim.
