If I had to pick one fairy tale I loved as a child, it was Bluebeard. Brought to life by Charles Perrault in 1697, & illustrated below by Doré & Dalziel in the 19thc, the tale’s themes of forbidden secrets & the perils of curiosity were as old as Pandora 😱🗝#FairyTaleTuesday

A Harry Clarke illustration from 'Tales of Charles Perrault' Clarke was stained glass artist. Imagine a 'church of fairy tales' with his illustration work as stained glass windows.

With fairy tales fashionable among Parisian aristocrats, Mother Goose Tales (1697) supported Perrault's view that nobility was superior to peasantry. Many stories also reflected Catholic beliefs, eg purification from sin & repentance before re-entering society.

Perrault used images familiar to him, eg the Chateau Ussé for The Sleeping Beauty, & the Marquis of the Château d'Oiron as the Marquis de Carabas in Puss in Boots. He also ornamented his folktales with details, asides & subtext drawn from the world of fashion.

Bluebeard’s secret, locked chamber is burned in fairy-tale memory. Perrault’s French, 17thc version is the tale we know. It haunts us: his murdered wives stowed away & hidden in that secret room, the bloody key -the symbolism & histories are rich. (See below 🗝)

There are many interpretations of a historically acurate dress. Charles Perrault published his Cendrillon in 1697. The Grimm brothers published their Aschenputtel in 1812. In their mind Cinderella's dress and shoes could have looked something like this.

"Do not trust your eyes," he answered, "and set me free from my misery."
