It’s Pontormo’s birthday (#BOTD in 1494), as good an excuse as any to share his magnificent Deposition, in Florence’s Santa Felicita, and his thirst trap selfie.

Pontormo drew many nude studies from life. His understanding of the Male form was impressive with an ability to create emotion & explore elegant poses.

One of Pontormo’s greatest legacies is his beautiful body of drawings, especially of the nude. These ranged from ideas that he jotted down to preliminary drawings for his paintings.

Pontormo’s most important pupil was Bronzino. The latter inherited his love of elegant lines & idiosyncrasy from his master. Noli Me Tangere (1530s), Martyrdom of St Maurice (1531) & Venus & Cupid (1533). The latter is based on a Michelangelo prototype too.

Mannerism came after the High Renaissance. It sought to depict characters in emotional & dramatic form. Figures lengthen to become graceful & swan-like necks elongate in a hallucinatory style. Pontormo was one of its great masters. Madonna & Saints (1518) & Holy Family (1518)

Damaged frescoes in Certosa del Galluzzo, Florence, unexpectedly have extra visionary power. By Pontormo, born OTD 1494.

Start the day with listening to udio on thinking about colour and shame and how her work reminds me of Pontormo for some reason! Anyway, I’m working on using some of P’s lovely compositions as a framework for people, emotions, ideas

Jacopo Pontormo - Emmaus Dinner (Jesus & All Seeing Eye) from 1525. Notice the curious pets around the table, the rolled up that has the paintings date. This is one my favorites "not 4 Jesus" but all the curious things included

2/ When they reach Emmaus, Christ tells them he's walking on. But they persuade him to stay and have supper with him. At dinner, he breaks the bread - and, suddenly, they recognise him! The moment has inspired lots of great art. Clockwise Caravaggio, Velazquez, Titian, Pontormo.
