Just to show how dry soils are, here's a map showing the soil moisture status across the UK yesterday, and a time series of soil moisture from the COSMOS-UK Rothamsted site where after a wet winter soils have dried steadily to levels typical of July.
Doubles need no explanation and can be grown in pot or well drained soils.
