Ultraman using a specium ray is a special effect, tokusatsu, because it combines hand drawn animation with live action.

Toradora is not a tokusatsu because it's animation.

Tokusatsu, if you're unfamiliar with the word, is a broad term for Japanese special effects shows that include series like Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Ultraman, & even Godzilla. So if it heavily features suits, practical effects, or digital VFX, then it might be tokusatsu.

They're themed after Zener cards and various psychic abilities. Only a few readers have caught this, so I wanted to point it out. I LOVE tokusatsu, so I wanted the theming of this team to feel as authentic as possible.

Honestly from this week, it's something that Tatsunoko doesn't get as much notoriety when I say it was the first of animated Tokusatsu, predating Ultraman. It's like, I kinda understand more now.
