FILM OF THE DAY: Genuinely strange & eerie 1934 is 1 of cult director finest (& highest budgeted) 🎞️ with & at their most elegantly creepy amidst stunning sets with intriguing post WWI anti war theme

Blues, greens & reds became really important to him & he was now painting confidently in his own signature style. Village (1913), The Soldier (c1914), Return of the Prodigal Son (1914) & Hexenritt (1916). Images of good & evil marked WWI

From 1911-12 he evolved a new more austere style termed his Gothic period. From 1914-19 he was called up for WWI. 1916 saw him illustrate Breton’s Mont de Piete. Martigues (1913), Man with Newspaper (1914), La Verre Noir (1913) & Portrait (1914)

Mata Hari

While she had an elaborate backstory about being a Javanese princess, she was Dutch. Being from a neutral country during WWI, this allowed her to travel easily between the borders. Her impact on the war was likely greatly exaggerated due to needing a scapegoat.

FILM OF THE DAY: New psychological prequel to recent film X, is less the campy gore fest it’s being sold as & more a compelling downbeat period character study with fine titular performance by as disturbed but oddly sympathetic WWI era farm girl

Been watching “Le Roman de Renard” which is a FANTASTIC film. So much effort was put into every single expression and detail, with the melancholic post-WWI influence making the film ever so much better. Also it was made in 18 months in 1929 so like, mad respect.
