Secondary cavity nesters like parakeets, mynas, owls, rollers and several other birds depend on woodpeckers for nesting sites? I'm moving homes so I thought I'd share this cartoon from my 2016 archives :)

Early in the morning on a lush spur trail I watched these acorn woodpeckers play, preen, and peck to their hearts content. They never stopped moving, my head spun as they flitted from snag to snag, celebrating a brand new day.

It’s April 11, and yet there’s snow on the ground here in Milwaukee. While this may be disconcerting to us, it doesn’t seem to have any effect on the Downy Woodpeckers in our neighborhood, who are happily hammering away in tree lawns and woodlands, and making ready their nests.

Saguaros make great resting spots & homes for a variety of birds. Gila woodpeckers peck holes in them to make nests for their chicks. These high-rise Saguaro apartments are a safe space away from the hot desert sun & roaming predators 🏜#illustration from my book The Night Flower
