In the comics (caveat), the concave structure lets it fly along a straight path supported by it's spin. The Vibranium (Adamantium?) composition of the shield reflects kinetic energy with equal force in the opposite direction along the same path. Catching it is just skill.

he also had a arc where he lost his regeneration ability for long time when magneto rip out all the adamantium from his body. he even died but Illyana Rasputina was waiting for him in the after life pushed him back from entering. (note: not read any marvel comics since the 90s)
