I have put together some of my previous illustrations for today's theme on busy fish. We have the migratory salmonids, Jaw fish busy digging their nests, Malawi cichlids well known for mouth brooding and Agassiz's cichlid busy in parenting and baby care!!!

M is for Maingano cichlids!
This week's theme was "Fish starting with the first letter of your name". There are so many M cichlids, but the bright stripes on Maingano are definitely a standout. This is a male, identifiable by yellow egg spots on it's anal fin!

Labeotropheus trewavasae, or Trewavas' cichlid, is a rock scraping cichlid native to Lake Malawi in Africa. Lots of work being done with them to help us understand plasticity and adaptive radiations!

Childcare can be tough no matter your species - just ask the mouthbrooding cichlid moms!

Females of several cichlid species hold their developing young inside their mouths until they hatch, making feeding impossible - so Mom may go without eating for weeks

Here's another Lake Malawi cichlid. It happens to be a fish that actually likes 😉.

All jokes aside, here is Sciaenochromis fryeri, an 'electric blue hap' (whatever that means these days...). https://t.co/vCCvjdTWMQ

Yesterday's "something new" was Petrotilapia sp. It'll be up on my website, and in my store, within the next couple hours. Also had a bit of fun with the face 🙂. If I can figure out the species, I'll update.

This week's plays dead and is a mouthbrooder: Livingston's cichlid. This particular species is native to Lake Malawi in Africa. It seems to play dead to lure in prey, and then quickly snaps it up!

The colors on Xenotilapia are striking and were fun to paint. I illustrated these cichlids for research by Fabrizia Ronco and the Salzburger lab. https://t.co/3CIsO0lQnY

A bright Electric yellow cichlid for today's fish sketch!
Electric yellows are one of the most popular cichlids in the Australian ornamental industry, growing to only 8cm and are relatively cheap to purchase. Keep them with other African cichlids for a lively community tank!
