もはやここに至ってジョン・ワイヤーとて旧態化したGT40でまともに戦えるとは思うはずもなく。68年半ばからJ.Wオートモーティブ・エンジニアリングはフォードと完全決別し後継車であるF1エンジン搭載（BRM:V12とコスワースDFV）の「ミラージュM2/3」を開発。しかし気難しい新車は熟成に時間を要した。
