For those interested the last image is a detail from one of two stunning frescoes from #Herculaneum showing stages of a religious ritual dedicated to Isis. The god is symbolised by water in a golden vase. from The other fresco also has some lovely ibises lurking around the altar.
The defiant gaze staring out of this torn & misshapen metal face is breathtaking. For me, this crumpled silver portrait of Livia, wife of Augustus, is one of the most arresting objects & one that embodies the destructive yet preservative nature of the AD 79 eruption. #Herculaneum
Stumbled across this, presumably rare, photograph of the painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema on site in #Pompeii sketching in the House of Sallust.
His most famous painting of Pompeii is ‘An Exedra’ (1869) set at the schola (bench) tomb of the priestess Mammia near the Herculaneum Gate.

The traditional date that #Vesuvius started to erupt, destroying the cities of #Pompeii & #Herculaneum, is 24th-25th Aug 79 AD. This is due to a letter written by Pliny The Younger. It is now believed the disaster occurred in the autumn, as many braziers have been found in homes.
