FROM INUIT PEOPLE: If you squint enough, maybe you’ll see yourself in the idyllic northern visions of being one with nature that Kenojuak Ashevak created with her honest, unwavering hand—it’s rumored she never even used an eraser because nature doesn’t either.

FROM INUIT PEOPLE: Throughout her extensive career Kenojuak Ashevak went from being the first woman on Cape Dorset to engage in arts to becoming the subject of many documentaries and news reports: no one could resists being fascinated with her majestic creatures.

FROM INUIT PEOPLE: Kenojuak Ashevak had a lot of suffering in her life: for instance, 7 of her 16 children died due to the government’s involvement in the lives of Indigenous citizens, and tuberculosis. But you could never tell from her intricate, bright works.

"There is no word for art. We say it is to transfer something from the real to the unreal. I am an owl, and I am a happy owl. I like to make people happy and everything happy. I am the light of happiness and I am a dancing owl." Happy Birthday Kenojuak Ashevak!

I finished another page of my paper so I allowed myself to spiral into my favorite region of indigenous art which is the Pacific Northwest and Arctic, and here is the artwork of Kenojuak Ashevak, a fucking rockstar and considered the founder of modern Inuit art.
