One of my favorite character-building exercises is moodboards or collages based on their character.

The way I do it is looking at them & thinking, "what is this character made of?" And then I slap down ANYTHING that I can think of.

6. My design process varies a lot, sometimes I have an idea right out of the gate, sometimes I'll need stuff like moodboards to help me with ideas. Music is also a huge inspirations and I associate the majority of my characters with a specific song!
