Punjabi folktales speak of a 16th century hero known as Dulla Bhatti, the “Son of Punjab”. He is said to have revolted against Mughal rule, looted the rich to give to the poor, and rescued abducted women from slavery. He was a Muslim but looked after people of all faiths.

in 1689 the Great Pashtun warrior poet died.

He preached the union of all Pashtuns, and encouraged revolt against the Mughal Empire, promoted Pashtun nationalism.

He is considered the 'Father of Pashto Literature'.
