S is for Southwark Bridge. These images show John Rennie's bridge, opened 1819. the cast iron bridge had three flat arches supporting a 42 ft wide roadway. Its centre arch was the longest of its kind at that time. It was replaced by the current bridge in 1921

John Rennie's Southwark Bridge opened 1819. Originally called Queen Street bridge, the centre span was said to be the longest cast iron span ever built, at 240ft (73m). It was replaced in 1921 as it was too narrow to cope with the growing traffic.
