Trying too hard can cause you to over focus on details, and miss the general look.
Have you tried blocking out colours before you shade, like this? I mostly do it for the undersketch for paintings, but can help as a starting point too.

I wanted to see if I could draw, color, and shade, a little Yoongi using almost entirely only the shape tool, line tool, bucket, and eraser. He looks kinda funny but it was a fun challenge 😊 Also this is proof anyone can do art with the right tools!
