My Favourite C64 Coders No.21

Denton Designs

Denton made some of the greatest games of the golden age of 8-bit computer gaming. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Shadowfire, Enigma Force, The Great Escape, Mutants – to name a few. All of them are original, absorbing, brilliant games.

Yeah, I'd seen some really excellent Ultimate Play the Game published games on my friend's Spectrum, then got Karnath, and Entombed, which I enjoyed on the C64. Then it went Blackwych (meh), Outlaws (impossible-hard), and Imhotep (ghastly - I've lost the faith.) 😐

My Fave C64 Coders No.22

Rowlands Brothers

Steve & John made some of the C64’s finest games in its twilight years, earning a ZZAP! Sizzler (Retrograde 94%) & 3 Gold Medals: Creatures (96%), Creatures 2 (97%) & the stunning achievement that is Mayhem in Monsterland (97%). Wow!

There was a definite period in the C64's history when *everything* had to be bas relief. 🤔 The game, the score-panel, the fonts.. 😁 Not that I mind it. The three shades of grey made it easy. But it's something I'm more aware of now, looking back.

Zach Townsend

Zach didn’t get off to a great start with Cobra, but he more than made up for it in the years that followed with 3 superb games - 2 ZZAP! Sizzlers - Platoon & Batman: The Caped Crusader - and the Gold Medal winning Batman: The Movie.

David Fox

David worked on all three of Lucasfilm’s groundbreaking adventures, starting with Labyrinth, then the legendary point-and-click titles Maniac Mansion with Ron Gilbert and Zack McKracken with Matthew Kane. Wow!

Colin Porch

Colin achieved what no one else had done before – port an isometric Spectrum game to the C64 without making it a slow-motion snooze-fest! Head Over Heels is brilliant, as is Operation Wolf and Gryzor/Contra is pretty darn good too.

Andrew Spencer

If, like me, you played International Soccer to death as a kid, Andrew Spencer will be a name you’re very familiar with. Andrew’s other great games include the brilliant International Basketball and Street Sports Basketball.
