In 2 you can see Eggman in the back observing the clunky mecha sonic, which could be interpreted as an idea for a bulkier build, and 3&K Mecha was built from the weird cyclops death egg parts. Afterwards both the clunky design and the ability to absorb power lead to chaotix.

You know that Knuckles TV show spin-off?
I think a good basis for it is Knuckles Chaotix, with Espio, Vector, etc. I don't think Eggman would be the villain in it, but an interesting choice would be Fang/Nack.
He was prominent in the classic era, and has history with Knuckles.
