I have been trying to solve this problem with a commissioner for a while now, as I do Silverstream images for them. The BEST I can do that makes sense in my brain is that they're individual feathers.

Once the victim is fully enveloped, the absorption begins, just as if it was trapped inside the harpy's belly.

Absorbing prey this way grants a higher chance to upgrade her wings.
