For explanation, the description of the hairstyle calls it a reference to the "look of a legendary Vartan warrior." In Ogre Battle, the name of the race of the hawk men is "Vartan." Canopus, pictured to the right here, is a hawk man who joins you in Ogre Battle for SNES.
