A HUGE part of the look of Entergalactic was to get “illustrated form” into the texture maps.

pretty much this yeah. I used to make custom Xrd colors actually. the main problem was that you had to use a 3rd party program to hook the game and load custom textures. and by doing that the game would desync a bunch when you tried playing online, so it was never worth it.
