I always use reference, but I dont marry myself to it. Its there if I need it but if something looks better in a way that perhaps not 100% "correct" I do that instead. I think that's where your "style" comes in. Play around and be bold, try weird stuff, it's only a painting.

Two weeks ago I started playing D&D with my friends, and this is my character, Tyam! I made the mistake of choosing a stylized portrait as reference, so I couldn't figure out well how to make the chest. I was still very proud of the face tho :P
