I'm seeing some debate on here about the best era of animation. There's so much great stuff from every decade, it's hard to pick, but my favorite cartoon decade is the 1940s. The executives mostly stayed out of the process at that point and cartoonists got to run wild.

Before Bob Monkhouse was a film star and a comedian he was a comic-book artist and cartoonist. I met him once and I was in awe of him. A comic he drew in the late 1940s was called Captain Crash and this is a homage I drew to that, with the captain sitting atop Nelson’s Column.
