I have a huge 💙 for the 8bit era dirty & creatively detailed style. Creative use of dithering and nice sharp contrasts make them both beautiful and easy to read on the play-ability end. Games like Batman titles, Shatterhand, Vice: Project Doom, and a bunch of the Natsume games.

One approach to get a lot of mileage from limited palettes like the palette is to make mini-palettes for each sprite, so that if you half-close your eyes, color blobs are distinct from background. It's like blending/ dithering, just not ordered ▒

…however! I just realized that I could actually introduce *more( dithering, by manually creating new dithering pairs for "solid" color. Solids in Sci0 are actually dithers of the same-color: blue-blue… But, you don't need to respect that! I've only used it for palette swaps:

Doing some art to Arapuca, our new Mega Drive game. Hand draw, water colour painting, scan, and them the 16 color pixel art. I take the scan, reduce to 320x224, reduce the colors to 32 colors, then hand picked the palette to reduce to 16, and retouched all adding manual dithering
