Our trip through Icelandic Christmas folklore concludes with the Jólakötturinn – or Christmas Cat.

He's a black hairy beastie who hunts down and EATS children who don’t receive something new to wear for Christmas! I think he's giving cats a bit of a bad name!

Merry Christmas!

The thirteenth and final Icelandic Yule Lad, who will be visiting Thursday night and leaving treats for Friday morning, is Kertasníkir, or Candle-Stealer. In olden days, candles used to be made from animal fat.... Kertasníkir evidently developed a taste for them.

The piece is inspired by the legend of the Yule Cat. In Icelandic tradition, this giant and vicious cat is active during Christmas time, when it may travel to towns and cities and eat anyone who hasn't received new clothes to wear before Christmas.

Who's next? It's Gáttaþefur or Doorway-Sniffer! Our eleventh Yule Lad boasts a massive nose with which he can smell Icelandic laufabrauð (leaf bread) from great distances. Miraculously, he never gets a cold!

My plan was to create a New World in the Metaverse so I trained AI with thousands of my landscape photos from Iceland to create this piece.

If you're still up just after midnight tonight, you might catch a glimpse of our next Icelandic Yule Lad. Askasleikir or Bowl-Licker, sneaks into homes in the early hours of December 17, to hide under beds and steal the bowls people put down for their dogs and cats to lick. Nice!
