maybe it's the colors? i suggest sticking to a more simplistic style, and desaturate the colors so it's not as noticeable when the characters are added!! calm color palettes help with bgs, i have a couple examples for some forest bgs

Realistic looking ears do look kind of uncanny on such a simplistic/cartoony style. So either make the ears less realistic/cartoony to accommodate it or make the art more "realistic" looking (ie at least a "anime" style/proportions.Not the best examples but each half is an option
