Here is my take on VERY SIMPLE BASIC COLOURING!!! You can try it out. And i do this in only 2 layers. Base colour is one layer and the rest is masked/clipped to another layer.

I usually use a brown-lavander-greyish color on a multiply layer, then use 1-2 more multiply layers to darken specific parts, play around with opacity. I’m terrible at highlights so I used a clipped add layer (gold) on the flat colors

there are many different ways to do it. My biggest suggestion is to use layers and "clipping masks"

here I have a base color for the area I am going to color. then "clipped layers" above that for each character or element.

This makes it LOADS easier to change colors :)

Found another style with halftone. Basically a halftone is clipped to another one; one handles the color, another handles the radius.
While it's okay on dark colors, bright colors might look... unpleasant.
