I rarely use black or grey for shadows! I prefer using darker blues or purples, but it’s also really nice to use a color that complements the part that needs shading

More saturated and darker colors need to be on an overlay layer rather than soft light. Left is overlay right is soft light.

1. make a shape with bright red & shade it
2. make a rlly dark red that looks more like black/brown & add to darker areas
3. slightly smudge parts then add white highlights
The flats are now done, but the first one didn't look quite right, the colors looks too bright, flamboyant even. So got to thinking. If i'm going to have a nightmare version of my character the color scheme needs to be darker. Thus image 2

@CryptoMiyagi_ Noooooo… negative space is super important for artwork & can make the work strong. As (mostly) a Maximalist, I cover pretty much every surface of the pieces I make (even if it’s just a much darker color) but I still use plenty of negative space sometimes.
