The usual methods of real world terrain + some (a lot of) decimate doesn't really work because with few polys, it just looks like noise and you lose the recognizable structures.

Sure, you could decimate your hairs. This may risk messing the texture up in some places. I prefer dissolving edges where they are not needed...
