In conclusion, I started off with "how to draw like Shinkawa?" and moved on to "why does Shinkawa draw x like this?" and eventually to "how do I, as a Shinkawa-influenced artist, want to draw this?” (9)

Instead of surface level imitation, I started developing my own visual way of thinking, which is heavily based on how I assume Shinkawa approaches different shapes and forms
Ironically I realized that because of this I started in a way veering away from the apparent art style (6)

Due to the massive amounts of drawings I made in the style, I started gradually realizing and understanding the purpose of how Shinkawa draws things. (5)

Broke: complaining about art styles and making up stupid names for them
Woke: sharing art styles we love and are inspired by!

I’ve always admired the tense, loose, and rough style of Yoji Shinkawa’s artistry. His work on is IMHO, the edgiest of all time! Now, I’m looking for someone who can match Shinkawa’s talent, so please hit me up if you can help! Grateful for retweets.🙏

Some Rainbow Six fanart I made on stream the other day. Wanted to try my hand at a character splash screen that is more painterly than the in game renders.

If firearms aesthetics weren't so integral to Metal Gear's design I would agree. However their distinct visuals is why Kojima picked the FAMAS, PGS1 etc. specifically. Ohrai and Shinkawa still drew screen accurate firearms despite the graphics. It's the biggest difference imo.

I learnt about the Ukiyo-e pop art style today, courtesy of an interview with Tamara Yamamoto and Yoji Shinkawa in The Art of Metal Gear Solid 2 book. Saw this fun example by Jed Henry and Dave Bull

A couple of doodles of Snake and Meryl, looked at some references of Yoji Shinkawa’s artwork. Really want to replicate that style of ink drawings and watercolor, someday.
