The name Brocade pointed me in the direction of textiles, and I found several comparisons for the pattern in the V&A collection, such as this c. 1880 woven brocade from
Varanasi, India.
Note the variegated background and the bold outlines of the motifs.
The 'Star' seems to be the defining motif for both Julia and Kasumi. Julia has a blue star on her left cheek. Her song 'Ryuuseigun' means 'meteor shower' or 'shooting stars' (coincidentally, 'kirakira' and 'dokidoki' appear in the lyrics). Both their signatures incorporate stars.

Concurrently, I was describing the anatomy of fossil crocs and dinosaurs. I struggled with illustrating and finally gave up stippling braincases like I used to and opted for a tracing and shading motif instead. Photos + illustrations are our primary expose of anatomy data.
