Since sprites act more like cel shaded drawings than paintings, they require a lot more colors if they want that extra detail. Especially for things like diffuse and ambient occlusion in the artistic sense.

Included in the Japanese Dirty Pair LD boxset, this is a square piece of art silkscreened onto thick plastic(I don't know if there is a name for it). It's slightly translucent, so it can be backlit. It resembles a hand-painted cel, so that's likely how the source was made.

Throwback to these cuties! I really enjoy cel-shading, it's so clean and fresh looking. It took me a long time to get the hang of it, turned out I needed to understand shading first before I could tackle a simplified version x3
