the pairing of Optimus Primal as a gorilla and Megatron as a T-rex in Beast Wars was inspired by the original King Kong.

Primal's original bio even describes him as a gargantuan King-Kong style gorilla, though the cartoon opted to have him as a regular gorilla instead. (1996)
