Comparing vulpix helps illustrate my point a lot. They have smoothed over a lot of its form, given it a larger head and eyes, and removed a lot of its animalistic nature.

This is way further exaggerated in a Pokémon like Fennekin. (No toes, big head. Face is a ball and cone)

I love how the Tails 30th anniversary special highlighted how Tails' strength lays in his ability to step back for a second and *think* in order to strategize, as opposed to Sonic's tendency to 'run fast and ask questions later' which backfires hugely here.
