In 1968 Takahata's Prince of the Sun gave us Hilda, the first great female character in anime, and apparently brought Miyazaki to tears. He's been innovating for 50 years, and no one in the industry can match his ambition (no, not even Miyazaki). I'm sad to hear of his passing.
