He was one of the last major gothic painters yet combined an element of the Renaissance Humanism which swirled around him. This combination of old & new is fascinating. Virgin & Child (1476), St Roch (c1480) & Virgin & Child (c1480)

In recognition of #BlackHistoryMonth "Black in Time: A Black Renaissance" opens January 31. Details here: https://t.co/9r3PpdCvrs
I love to use Alphonse Mucha as an example. Bam look at all those precise details in the ink work. The shading is minimal and done with a light touch--around chin and eyes to show contours of the face. If he rendered figures like Renaissance painters do, you would see none of it

One of his most beautiful works is Boreas. It’s clear he had studied the draperies of Renaissance Venetian art. Boreas (1903), Echo & Narcissus (1903) & Study for Lamia (c1904-5)
European goldfinch, illustrated by Eliza Turck for Familiar Wild Birds (1883) #art
The goldfinch is often depicted in Italian renaissance paintings of the Madonna and Child.

One of the great triumphs of science in the Renaissance were Leonardo’s botanical studies of plants. Lady with Unicorn (c1480), Lily (1480-5), St Jerome (1480) & St Sebastian (1480-1). St Sebastian was often used as a coded symbol for gay artists.
I wanted to have a more light-hearted post after my initial disaster of a morning (and I also technically was behind on a post) so allow me to introduce to you Castle Swimmer's version of a Renaissance painting
