besides the obvious character dimension stuff (you can experiment a lot with weird coloured shading!) i feel like even a supposedly blank background can be improve with a subtle gradient & maybe a texture brush!

I do like the ol' croc body design, but not so much the simple grey above. I like comic croc, as exemplified by Sad Croc below. All the ridges and scales really up his expressions (though subtle) and intimidation.
