Another lady in blue, Auguste Renoir’s La Parisienne. Painted in 1874 it featured in the first exhibition of Impressionist art the same year. Reactions were mixed, but it’s now one of the stars of the collection bequeathed to the National Museum, Cardiff, by Gwendoline Davies.

Vincent van Gogh died in 1890. Today, he is one of the most popular Post-Impressionist painters, although he was not widely appreciated during his lifetime. He is now famed for the great vitality of his works, characterised by his emotive use of brilliant colour.

the thing that i love about caricatures is that you aren't a hostage to the photo ref so much as if you are doing a portrait, and yes i know you couldn't do a more impressionistic portrait but caricatures are a lot more fun because of the shapes
