Gen Benjamin Lincoln formally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown however in 1775 he served in the MA Provincial Congress. Lincoln oversaw militia organization & supply a position of vital importance when the Revolutionary War erupted w/ the Battles of Lexington & Concord.

As the artist matured his brushwork became more fluid & he used longer brushes which gave his work a sense of movement. His portraits of the Duchess of Beaufort (c1775), Mrs Graham (c1775) & of his nephew & assistant Gainsborough DuPont (c1775) are ravishing masterpieces

Reynolds sought to ‘raise’ the importance of portraiture by using compositions derived from Old Masters & often swathing his sitters in ‘classical attire’. Irish artist Nathaniel Hone saw this as aspirational hogwash & satirised Reynolds as The Conjuror (1775)
