simply I would just guide people to try to pick base tones, usually artists' can play around those with lighting. a base tone and 1 shadow tone are helpful. Anime references are a good example😁

Here's some feedback I've given in the past, with notes on design or construction as well as red-lining to back it up. I always try to keep it as close as possible to the style of the original instead of giving tips that seem insurmountable at the artists' current level.
