They will simplify the drawings, you barely see their faces, they don't even have eyes here (often used to make a character feel distant).
There is a vid where Otsuka talks about simple bg characters, vaugely human shaped blobs standing in the back with just a mouth on its face.

I made some blobs that spawn particles/leaves in Blender. Then I merge all the foliage and transfer the normals from the blobs onto the leaves.

Then I uv mapped a gradient from bottom to top of the leaves to make a color shift from the bottom to top.

I find this a bit bad like it feels there is too many lines everywhere and I can tell what stuff is but it feels lacking even though it's sketch with color. Also blobs can look pretty decent even a color sketch
