If ladies were doing high speed things (such as ice-skating, shown here), women wore shallow little bonnets they could see around easily.

The deep poke bonnets were for when they needed deep shade and were ambling slowly or otherwise not needing peripheral vision.

A bonnet ties under the chin, a hat does not.

That's the only distinction, srsly. Sometimes the only way you can tell what's a bonnet is if it has ribbons dangling down.

But as for those poke bonnets, well, they just couldn't see to the sides. 🤷‍♀️
