Realism does not fit Sonic. It is explicitly a cartoon style. Sonic does not make any sense with a realistic look. All of Sonic's concept art was very clearly cartoon/anime style and that's where it takes inspiration. Other Sonic Team games like Ristar and NiGHTS follow suite.
