One of my favorite things is to do rainbow effects:
- draw out your shapes (ignore the green line) in a distinct color
- lock the shapes layer and use the rainbow tool (might take some finesse to see what "feels" right)
- turn shapes into a glow dodge, reduce opacity, duplicate

Mech from that sketch I posted on Friday. Always liked the BF2142 idea of mechs. They aren't a super weapon, but a niche tool that tanks and regular infantry can deal with if used wrong.

Soft shading, but I don't put a lot of effort into it. I either use the gradient tool a bunch or a soft brush and just put a couple blotches in the right places
