Ancient piece that cropped up today so thought I'd post it. Done in 1997 while freelance when my work had dried up. My 1st try with markers and pencils. Smilodons and Bison latifrons, heavily influenced by Frank McCarthy and Russ Manning. Original long lost, sadly.
I love all the contrasting colours that depict the different settings, temperature, tone and motifs. From cool watery pastels and earthy reds (Atreides), sickly greens and blacks (Harkonnen) to opulent golds (The Emperor).
That sweet Freddie Francis cinematography.
Can you guess who painted these icebergs? Hint: It *wasn’t* #LawrenHarris (1885–1970), famed for his depictions of Arctic glacial masses. "Aurora and the Bergs" (1996) is the work of #DorisMcCarthy (1910–2010), who produced over sixty paintings of icebergs beginning in 1972.
