The GBA Pokemon games are a great example of this I feel. This first one is normal without a filter, the other one is with the filter. Zigzagoon kind of looks like a mess of pixels in the first image but in the 2nd she looks kind of like the official art.

Today I discovered the "Linear Burn" layer filter. When you apply a light source and/or weak shadows they turn out very correctly. Creating a groundwork with this method is fast and easy.
But it only works in well lightened areas & you can't draw the entire art with this anyways.
