First I traced the picture to simplify the structure. Then I compared the simplified lines to the actual picture, and then I drew the initial sketch by looking at the picture and lines separately. If the traced lines and the initial sketch are overlayed, lines don't overlap.

@Sugar_Tokki the outfit. my rule of thumb is adding more clothes will make the character looks cool, while less clothes or showing some body parts on the character will make her looks cute.
to oversimplify, cool is jeans and jackets, cute is tanktop and shorts
