So the AU departs from the main canon post-Volume 5. Salem uses an aspect of herself to lead 30,000 Grimmbeasts to Mistral in a bid of eradication and assimilation in the event later called 'The Culling'. Team RWBY and co intervened but were vastly outnumbered.

I like how even early on, James could see the chinks in Oz's approach to dealing with Salem. He could see that working in the shadows wasn't going to cut it-let's be honest, he's right as Salem's been playing that game FAR longer-but he sadly couldn't see the holes in own ways.
