Grouping the colours into groups of 3, 4, 5 or 6 in each vertical band gives more visual similarity, if you want bigger segments you have to tweak it a bit more.

Sometimes I think of that point and click I was making a few years ago. Have sketches and stuff, a lot of the puzzle flow and writing had been outlined and was being tweaked, I started animating character sprites, did background layouts and we'd started testing it w/ stand-in art
